what are your views of the different communities in which you play your music? are they different or pretty much the same? do you come into contact with issues that you feel need to be addressed? i understand that the plight of the homeless is something you are working on and i applaud you for that. how will you get and keep others outside of your organization involved in the process? what kind of support do you need from those of us who want to become involved with your mission? is it possible to make an announcement at the different venues when you play? "stay strong and keep your head up" peace...

Hi Sonnyjoe:

Your remarks have been quite interested.  We do appreciate your comments and we will attempt to address them.  We have encountered various types of communities throughout our playing experience.  We must say that the instruments used (steel drums or pans) are still having the majority of people we encounter  in a daze, or baffled, or in doubt, as to the sounds produced.  The steel drums are the only musical instruments internationally accepted in the 20th century.  All types of music are played on these instruments, and different reactions are incurred.  Different responses result from the audiences that experience the music, happinness, enjoyment, disgust, too loud, keep on playing, etc.  Society needs to be educated on this type of instruments used.  The players of these instruments need to be more professional in their approach once performing outside of the Caribbean.  The music and the instruments have to be sold to society.  It is therefore of great importance the manner in which you present yourself as a performer of the steel drums.

We are in the process of planning a project called "Night with the Homeless".  The attempt is to make people aware of the plight of the homeless.  Reasons for them being homeless, it can happen to you, the need of the homeless.  This is earmarked for the month of October.  Entire community will be involved.  There will be food, prayers, music, etc.  All will be invited to share and provide whatever they have with the homeless.  We provide meals and toileteries to the homeless every 3rd Sunday of the month.  Persons interested in assisting coild contact us for more information.

Our mission is to use the medium of the steel drums to refocus young people into becoming solid, respectful, educated, and helpful men and women of tomorrow.  In order to accomplish these traits much is needed from individuals, companies, organizations, and society in general.  Transport, equipment, uniforms are some of the major areas where assistance is needed.  We do not announce these needs at the various venues we perform, maybe we should, and maybe help will be forthcoming.

This is a non profit organization that is self sufficient.  This does not say that we do not need help and assistance.  We most definetely do, but we are humble in our wishes.

to themack,

i have heard other steel bands perform. they are good. but you guys have something very unique. you have a special excitement when you perform. i do not see this with all bands. you can tell that the young people really enjoy what they are doing. they smile so brightly that even if the music stopped for a moment the melody would still linger in the air. you have a special gift. you make people forget for a while about the troubles in the world. you take us to a peaceful place where we can be ourselves and remove the day to day masks that we wear. God has blessed everyone that has had the privilege to hear your wonderful sounds. keep doing what you are doing. keep sharing with the community. much love to STVYSO!!!!
